This is a very lovely old farmhouse located on a large farm where a farmer once had a vineyard and produced cognac. The landlord (Michele) was very friendly and helpful with suggestions about things we might want to visit in the area. He was attentive when we had a small problem with an appliance and he fixed that immediately. We were two retired couples and we had a perfect holiday here! We stayed there in May and the weather was fantastic; the house was surrounded by gorgeous rose bushes and honeysuckle and the splendor of grapevines just outside kitchen window. It is a rustic and picturesque property, convenient for taking long strolls, with a beautiful park and a castle just 10 minutes away (the Gran Marnier chateau is down the road.) The beds are firm and decent, and we appreciated that three of the beds were king sized. One bedroom has an ensuite fancy bathroom with toilet. Upstairs are three bedrooms, and there is a very nice shower (newly remodeled bathroom) with a small WC in a separate room down the hallway.! The old farm kitchen is quaint and cozy, and we liked having our breakfasts at the kitchen table which seats six. The kitchen has a good gas stove and a working oven, and was very well stocked with good cooking equipment,. We cooked some excellent meals at home once we found a butcher and a good bakery in the nearby town of Jarnac. We enjoyed the lovely outdoor patios where we could eat , listen to the delight of many birds singing (we even heard a cuckoo! ) The living room downstairs has good WIFI and we also liked the very large television. Another ample living area around the corner gives guests another space to hang out or play games. Additionally there is a very nice round table in the more formal dining area where we could eat if it was chilly or damp outside. There is a good washing machine and a large covered clothes-line for hanging the washing in the barn, so that even if it rains, your clothes can dry out. There is a dryer which we didn't need to use because the weather was fine for air-drying our clothing. The best thing about this place is the location. We wanted to be in the countryside, away from tourists and craziness, yet we wanted to be able to drive around France and see the countryside. It was perfect for a quiet holiday. We loved the beautiful town of Jarnac, (five minutes away) which has good pastry shops and a nice traditional market three days per week, and great restaurants. We were able to take about 10 scenic day-trip excursions around the area . No matter which direction we drove in our rental car, there were beautiful ruins, monasteries, vineyards, roman sites, museums, interesting cities, and great restaurants.
